THE ICE MACHINE AT PASTA & Chops was at the far bus station, on the other side of the dining room. Back at table eight, Dimitri had the thank-you hitcher cornered in a chair by the wall. All her clothes, hairbrushes, sleep bags were piled up around the empty packs. He had dug through them. Or she had. “Another walk-off,” he said. “Where were you?”

“Washroom,” I said, scooping ice from the machine into a bowl.

“I told you,” said the hitcher, “my friend will get the money. She’ll bring it back.” She was kicking the chair beside her, like a kid on the bench by the secretary, waiting for the principal. Her name was Maggie—the Maggie that the mom had brought up, the Maggie who liked iceberg lettuce.

“Table six needs a water,” he said, looming over me, reeking of Chivas and hostess mints. “And the lady at three says her veal came underdone.”

I pushed past him with the bowl, grabbed a dishcloth.

“Keep an eye on her,” he said, nodding to table eight.

I moved faster, unable to look at Maggie and her panic, telling her that Janice had her money. As if Janice wouldn’t turn around and tell her—tell everybody—that I had tried to take it from her. A girl.

“Maureen,” said Dimitri. “Jesus Christ.” He had noticed the period stains, my unzipped tunic. He had either drunk enough to fire me or drunk too much to fire me. Before he could make up his mind, I was too far across the room for him to drag me back to the office.
